5 Tactics the enemy uses on Believers

The enemy has been running the same scheme for thousands of years. He used it on Adam and Eve in the Garden, on David on the rooftop, on Job in the ash heap, and on Jesus in the wilderness. He is using a version of it on you right now. His tactical methods never truly change; what changes is whether or not you learn to recognize them.

Here is what almost nobody tells you about spiritual warfare: the attacks that hurt the most are rarely the obvious ones. They do not typically feel like an external attack. Instead, they feel like your own thoughts, your own conclusions, and your own discouragement. If the enemy can make his voice sound like yours and his accusations sound like your honest opinion of yourself, he does not need to do anything else. You will defeat yourself.

1 Peter 5:8 (NIV)

⁸ Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

Notice the word prowls he does not charge in and announce himself; he moves quietly, slowly, and secretly he is patient, it means he already has a plan and a pattern that he follows. Here are the exact tactics the enemy uses specifically on believers that God has set apart for something significant not because they are easy targets but because they are the ones he cannot afford to leave alone.

 The enemy cannot touch someone God has chosen without permission, in the book of Job, God and Satan are in conversation satan has been roaming the earth and God asks him a question have you considered my servant job, Satan answers does job fear God, you have put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has.

Job 2:3 (NKJV)

³ Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil? And still he holds fast to his integrity, although you incited Me against him, to destroy him without cause.”

Job 1:12 (NIV)

¹² The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”

 You see, satan could not breakthrough that hedge of protection without asking permission and God set the terms of what he could or could not do. “God said, do whatever you want with everything he possesses, but don’t harm him physically.”

Here’s another example of satan having to ask for permission before he can attack; At the Last Supper, Jesus turns to Peter saying satan has asked to sift you, (sifting is a metaphor for trials, testing, and purification), here satan is asking God if he could shake Peter’s life to separate true faith from impurities.

Luke 22:31-34 (NIV)

³¹ “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. ³² But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

Satan has demanded permission, here the word demand does not mean taken, he still must ask for permission. Jesus did not refuse the request, Jesus said I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. This means two things at the same time. First the attacks on your life are not random the enemy does not waste his energy on people who pose no threat to his plans the pressure you are facing right now is often proportional to what God is building through you. Second satan is always working inside a limit he did not set, he cannot go further than God allows. The hedge is real, even when it does not feel like it.

Here are five tactics the enemy uses in the order he most often uses them.

 The first tactic is this before he attacks your behavior, your relationships or you are calling he attacks who you are. He did it to Jesus in the wilderness saying if you are the Son of God. You see Jesus had just been baptized, the heavens had opened the spirit had descended like a dove and a voice from heaven had said this is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased. God had just declared Jesus’ identity publicly out loud and immediately after that the enemy showed up and the first words out of his mouth were if you are the son of God. 

It is a seed of doubt placed directly on top of what God had just spoken, this is the pattern the enemy uses to attacks our identity in the most aggressive way. The bigger the God’s promise, the clearer the calling, the stronger the confirmation the faster and sharper the stronger your identity is attacked. Here is how it shows up in your life it will not sound like a theological argument it will sound like your own inner voice you are not really called to this, you are fooling yourself, that sense of purpose you felt was just emotion not God, you are not the kind of person God actually uses. That voice will sound like honest self-reflection it will feel like clarity it is neither.

Revelation 12:10 (NKJV)

10 Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.

Revelation calls him the accuser of the brethren, the one who accuses them before God Day and night. Accusation is his full-time job because he knows that anyone who does not understand their true identity in Jesus Christ can never walk in their full purpose.

Ask yourself: Is the doubt you are feeling targeted directly at your identity in Jesus Christ? Does it intensify right after a major breakthrough or a moment of confirmation? If so, that pattern has a name and identifying it is the first step toward breaking it.

The second tactic the enemy waits for the moment you are most depleted before he moves in, Jesus had been fasting for 40 days and 40 nights, after the fast he was hungry and that exact moment is where the tempter (satan) came in. The same pattern was used with Elijah right after Mount Carmel, Elijah had witnessed one of the greatest miracles in the Old Testament he called fire down from heaven, he stood against 450 false prophets, he prayed for rain after three and a half years of drought.

He was physically wrecked emotionally empty running on nothing, and then Jezebel sent one single threat and Elijah collapsed and ran for his life. He sat under a tree and told God to just take him; this was the same man who had called down fire from heaven now asking to die not because his faith was weak but because he was completely empty.

For most people, the greatest spiritual vulnerability often shows up right after the greatest spiritual for victory not before it, after the emotional high drops off. The body is drained and into that gap the enemy inserts fear, accusation, and despair. He dresses it up as honest conclusions about your life, most accidents on a mountain happen on the way down not on the way up the summit has already been reached, the climber relaxes and the guard comes down.

 The enemy knows this pattern well, he does not always attack during the hard season, he attacks the moment you finally exhale after surviving it. So, asking yourself is the heaviness you feel is showing up right after something significant happens in your life, like after a victory, after a breakthrough. Are you more exhausted than your circumstances that is not weakness that is a targeted attack on a tired soul. God's answer to Elijah in that moment was not a sermon it was food, water, and rest. God met the physical need first.

The third tactic is isolation and it is the one that makes every other tactic more effective, when Elijah ran from Jezebel, he left his servant behind at Beersheba and went a full day's journey into the wilderness alone and in that aloneness the lies came fast. I am the only one left, I have failed completely none of that was true.

Elijah was never alone, but the isolation made the lie feel like fact. Lions hunt by isolating individual prey from the herd, the enemy separates a target first then he moves in. At the Last Supper, satan entered Judas he immediately went out and it was night the isolation was instant, and the darkness was both literal and spiritual.

³⁰ Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.

This tactic will not always look like being physically alone, it can look like shame that keeps you from telling anyone what you are carrying, it can sound like no one would understand or you should just handle this yourself.

So, ask yourself are you more isolated now than ever and is this isolation pulling you away from God, or is it pulling you closer to Him, because God also uses isolation but the isolation He uses produces closeness never paralysis.

 The fourth tactic he targets people furthest along in their calling or mature Christians. The intensity of spiritual opposition often increases for believers who are walking closely in their purpose and maturing in their faith. This tactic shows up as an opportunity that feels aligned with your purpose, but it is a compromise at the root. A relationship that feels right but requires concession to keep it, the offer that sounds reasonable or too good to be true, but it lacks something. Ask yourself: Is something in front of you right now that feels like the answer you have been waiting for, yet still feels off? Do not ignore that hesitation, that quiet unease deserves your attention, not your dismissal.

The fifth tactic this one operates in the heavenly realm, and it may be the most important one to understand in Revelation 12:10 describes the enemy as the accuser of our brothers and sisters who accuses them before God Day and night.

Zachariah 3:1-5 the high priest Joshua stands before the Angel of the Lord, and the accuser (satan) stands beside him to bring charges. Joshua is dressed in filthy clothes, and the accusation is not false the sin is real, but God does not deny the charge he rebukes the accuser removes the filthy clothes and dresses Joshua in clean robes instead. The verdict had already been settled by a different advocate.

1 John 2:1(NKJV)

¹My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

Jesus Christ, our advocate, has never lost a case. When feeling heavy, it helps to distinguish between guilt, conviction, and accusation. Conviction is specific, it leads directly to repentance and restoration. Accusation, on the other hand, is vague, repetitive, and designed to make you spiral. Ask yourself: does the voice pointing at your failure or draw you toward God, does it drive you away from Him? The first is conviction; the second is accusation. You are never required to receive an accusation.

It is also important to remember that not every hard season is a direct spiritual attack. Some of what you carry is simply the weight of living in a broken world. Recognizing real spiritual patterns early allows you to respond with clarity rather than confusion. However, recognition alone is not victory, the victory lies in what you choose to do after you recognize it.

On the very night these tactics were used against Peter, Jesus highlighted two truths that belong together: "Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail."

Jesus did not merely warn Peter that the attack was coming; He revealed that the prayer had already been offered before the rooster crowed and before Peter even understood what was happening. The enemy must ask permission, God sets the limits, and Jesus is already interceding before the fight even begins. The tactics of the enemy are real, but so is the intercession.

²⁵ Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

 He always lives to make intercession for those who come to God through Him not just sometimes, but always.
